Dental Flossing: Add on to Dental Care

Dental Flossing: Add on to Dental Care

Brushing alone won’t take care of your oral hygiene completely.

Food particles, bacteria, and plaque may be stuck up between your teeth. Periodontal disease and dental caries commonly start from gum line or between the teeth. There are areas between the teeth that a toothbrush can’t reach. Dental floss is a thin, soft thread used to clean up the gum line and area between the teeth.

Failure to remove the plaque every day will lead to the formation of tartar, which can only remove by professional cleaning. Interdental cleaning is essential for removing plaque and daily oral hygiene. Flossing is an interdental cleaning method as it can reach narrow interdental spaces and able to remove plaque, bacteria and food particles from these complex areas.

There is uncertainty in the efficacy of daily flossing. Recent updates from American dental association shown a concern about the strong evidence for the effectiveness of daily flossing. But a lack of strong evidence cannot equate to lack of effectiveness.

Guide the floss between your teeth using a gentle sawing motion. Slide it gently up-and-down between your teeth. Gently curve the floss around the base of the tooth.
Repeat the process between each tooth.

If you feel difficulty in handling the floss, there are suitable handles are available to hold the floss and deliver effective and easy flossing. There are electric flossers with water flossing mechanisms also available.
