Green Tea: A key to healthy smile

Green Tea: A key to healthy smile

“Can a cup of green tea keep the doctor away?” It is well known that green tea is good for health due to its various fascinating health benefits. There are proven the association between green tea consumption and improved health.

It is surprising that, green tea actually produced from the same plant where normal tea is obtained. It is made from the unfermented leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, which is rich in polyphenol catechins.

Why Green Tea?

Within a relatively short time, green tea became popular globally. Green tea has the following properties which help to improve and regulate various mechanisms in the body. All these activities are important for better oral health too.

Antioxidant activity: Antioxidants are compounds that protect cells against the damaging effects of reactive oxygen species. Imbalance between levels of reactive oxygen species and antioxidants leads to oxidative stress and thereby cellular damage. Polyphenols are powerful antioxidant compounds present in green tea, which produce direct and indirect antioxidant activity.
Ability to control inflammations: Components in green tea have better anti-inflammatory properties. It is having a regulatory role in controlling inflammations and related conditions.
Fight against pathogens: Green tea is known for antimicrobial activity against many types of microorganisms. Catechins present in the green tea shows inhibitory effects on oral pathogens.
Improve immune functions: A Healthy immune system is needed for better handling of infections and inflammations in the body. Green tea strengthens the immune system by protecting from the harmful effects of free radicals and oxidants.
Prevent cell damage and oral cancer: Free radical scavenging activity of green tea protects cells from DNA damage caused by reactive oxygen species. Decrease DNA damage prevents cancer initiation.
How does it work for oral health?

Green tea can prevent and control various oral health problems.

Prevent tooth decay and cavities
Antimicrobial activity of polyphenolic catechins present in the green tea prevents the bacterial attack and related tooth decay. Green tea reduces the acidity of the saliva and plaque formation. This favors for prevention of cavities. Also, it resists acid exposure to enamel and reinforces its remineralisation.

Enhance periodontal and gum health
Anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of green tea help to reduce periodontal diseases and promote gum health. Reduction in oxidative stress also supports for reducing gum inflammations (Gingivitis). Green tea also helps for periodontal regeneration and reducing gingival bleeding index.

Control Halitosis (Bad Breath)
Oral pathogens generate volatile sulfur compounds and they are the major cause of bad breath. Catechins in green tea fight against most of the periodontal pathogens and prevent bad breath.

Oral cancer prevention
Antioxidant and other supportive properties of green tea protect from cellular damage and cancerous tumor growth. Studies reveal that green tea can reverse, suppress or inhibit the progression of oral cancer.

Enhance oral hygiene
Increasing pH levels, reduction in plaque formation and effective pathogenic control by green tea in the oral cavity can boost up oral hygiene.

Consuming green tea have multiple oral health benefits. It can effectively reduce gingival inflammations as well as various periodontal diseases. Daily intake of green tea can be considered as an adjunct to routine oral care.

Caution: Excess intake of green tea may cause insomnia, restlessness, and loss of appetite.
