What is Dental Implant?

In a surgical procedure,Titanium metal screws are fixed in place of tooth roots in the jaw to hold an artificial tooth which is to replace a damaged or missing tooth, this is called a dental implant.

Dental implants take 2-3 sittings, local anaesthesia is used to carry forward the process. Those who go through the implant process state that there is very little to no discomfort during and post-surgery. The dental implantologists and periodontists (gum experts) work closely together to make an implant successful.

The implanted teeth work similar to the real ones, some are permanent teeth implants with fixed artificial crowns and some are removable Dentures. The implant with abutment of artificial tooth colour is matched with your adjacent natural teeth colour.

Dental implants can be a good option for those who may have lost a tooth or multiple teeth due to gum disease, injury/trauma and/or some other reason.

How is it done?

A personal treatment plan is developed according to the patient’s need which is followed by forging a metal post that will hold the dental implant. The titanium screw is then placed in the jaw, enough time is allowed (up to a few months) for the tissue around the post to secure it properly in the jaw and heal. A small connector post (abutment) is then attached to the secured post to hold the new tooth implant. The tooth is designed by taking an impression of all your teeth and a model of your bite is built, the new tooth is based on this model.

Types Of Dental Implants

ENDOSTEAL:- This is the most commonly done implant, the metal (titanium) screw is inserted into the jaw bone on which the tooth is fitted. This process is only possible if the patient has a healthy jaw and sufficient density. This implant is most preferred for having a stable and natural feeling of the implant.

SUBPERIOSTEAL:- This kind of implant is done for those who do not have a healthy or a good density of jaw bone. This is placed on the jaw bone with the metal frame, the post (where the implant fits) protrudes through the gum to hold the implant. This is a faster treatment in comparison to the endosteal implant, it is also not as stable as endosteal.

There have been technological advances that address the upper jaw implant issue as it has been the toughest to successfully implant due to insufficient bone quantity, quality and proximity to the sinus.

SINUS AUGMENTATION:- The process that resolves these issues by increasing the amount of bone in the upper jaw bone (raising the sinus floor). Following which the development of bone for the placement of dental implants is done.

RIDGE MODIFICATION:- This process approaches those issues that occur due to insufficient bone because of deformities. The gum is lifted to expose bony defects which are then filled in with bone or bone substitutes to rebuild the ridge (mouth roof). This improves aesthetics as well as the chances of successful implants.
